She'd been too late.

That was exactly what she realized when she'd opened the door. The second the door was open she could feel something was off in the air. She took a few tentative steps into the den and called out, "Oi! Who's about?" a customary way to greet the denizens of the den.

She already had a very strong idea who was about. And she didn't like it.

"No." She holds Jackie tight. "God, no, Jackie. Not on my life, you understand?"

She's shifted her grip on the girl, holding her upper arms so she can truly look at her, make her understand just how much she means what she's saying.

Jack looks at Nancy, at the serious expression on her face, and once again, tears come to Jackie's eyes. She leans in, her face buried into Nancy's shoulder, gripping tight.

"Thank you."

Nancy's everything to her, friend and family, if she didn't have Nance in her corner, Jackie couldn't survive this, she knows it.

She wraps her arms around the girl again, holding her tight, rocking her softly back and fourth.

"Anything," she replied, before pressing her lips against the top of Jackie's head, humming a familiar lullabye.

The lullabye is familiar, and a soft smile appears on her face.

"Ain't heard that in years."

“Haven’t has a need to sing it,” she says softly before picking up the tune where she left off.

"There's a need now?" It's a soft question. not sad, but not... necessarily happy.

“It’s comforting,” she runs her fingers through jackie’s hair. “I can stop if you want.”

"I like it," Jackie said simply, shifting slightly so she was a bit more comfortable.

"Alright, then." Nancy kept her fingers going through Jackie's hair, holding her as long as she needed. Soon humming gave into soft words: "Love imposes impossible tasks,
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,
Though not more than any heart asks
And I must know she's a true love of mine"

There's a contended noise from Jackie, as she shifts to be more comfortable, leaning against Nancy in a way she hadn't done for years, lulled to relaxation with her voice.

Nancy has no problem continuing the song, looping back to the beginning as she feels Jackie relax, if only a little. She'd let the girl stay here as long as she needed to. She could take her bed, she didn't care. The girl needed her protection, and she was going to give it to her. No matter what.

It's odd, but the song is lulling Jackie off into a sleep. She needed one, anyway, just to close her eyes for a few minutes and to not worry about, well, anything.

When she finally feels the girl breathing heavily against her, Nancy allows herself to stop singing, and to shift, slowly. Jackie isn't a big girl- neither is Nancy, but Jackie's light enough that she can gather the girl in her arms and place her on her bed. Then, she'll let her sleep.

And Nancy'll be sitting in a chair, facing the door, a loaded pistol in her hand. Just in case.
